Sestriere location map

Where is Sestriere?

Sestriere sits high in the Cottian Alps, in the Piedmont region of north-west Italy, right on the border with France. Perched at 2,035 metres above sea level, it’s the highest municipality in Italy — and one of the highest ski resorts in Europe. It’s built on a mountain pass between two valleys, Val Chisone and Val Susa, roughly 100km west of Turin and about 17km from the French border.

Sestriere lies at the heart of the Vialattea — the “Milky Way” — one of the largest interconnected ski areas in Europe, linking with the neighbouring resorts of Sauze d’Oulx, Sansicario, Cesana, Claviere and, across the border in France, Montgenèvre.

Getting to Sestriere by Air

The most convenient airport for Sestriere is Turin Airport (TRN), also known as Turin-Caselle. It’s located 16km north of Turin and around 90km from Sestriere, with a transfer time of approximately 1.5 hours by car.

During the winter season, several airlines operate direct flights from the UK to Turin, including British Airways, easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, and TUI, with direct services available from Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Bristol, Birmingham, and Manchester.

Travellers from the Republic of Ireland can also fly directly with Ryanair, which operates several services from Dublin and Shannon throughout the winter season.

Alternative Option: Milan Airports

If you can’t find a suitable flight to Turin, Milan’s three airports offer a wider range of routes, though with a longer transfer:

  • Milan Malpensa (MXP) — around 230km from Sestriere, with a transfer time of approximately 2 hours 50 minutes by car.
  • Milan Linate (LIN) — around 260km from Sestriere, with a transfer time of approximately 3 hours 15 minutes by car.
  • Milan Bergamo (BGY) — around 280km from Sestriere, with a transfer time of approximately 3.5 hours by car. Bergamo is the main hub for low-cost carriers such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air, so it’s often worth checking for cheaper fares here despite the longer drive.

Malpensa is well served from the UK and Ireland with a broad choice of airlines and frequencies, while Bergamo tends to offer the most budget-friendly options — useful backups if Turin flights don’t fit your dates or budget.
